On saturday we had our first counselling session. This is compulsory before the start of our first IVF cycle. We were both nervous because we had never been to a counsellor before, we didn't know what to expect. Aaron was going in with a negative attitude...he thought it was going to be like the sessions you see on TV lol
As soon as we met the lady she was very comforting. She started us off by running through the whole ins and outs of our upcoming IVF cycle, this included the finer details of the egg pick up and transfer. She put everything basicly and made sure we understood it all. At that point she asked about any phobias or worries we have - mine being my needle phobia. The counsellor pulled out the 3 types of needles that can be used during our cycle (at this point I wanted to pass out just holding them) and she explained how the needles work, where to insert etc. Then she went on about the certain drugs and what they did to my body and how that affected my moods/feelings.
The next point we discussed was coping with the 2 week wait. Main thing is to keep busy but dont overload yourself, reduce any stresses and try look after yourself food/drink wise. After the 2 week wait is results time and we discussed dealing with a failed cycle and the disappointment etc. but on a happy note we talked about a positive result and where to go from there (doctor/clinic wise, ongoing fertility drugs etc). Another strong point we talked about was the higher risk of miscarriage in IVF/ICSI pregnancies.
As you can see I have tried to jam all the info into a small post so sorry for the lack of detail. But all in all we were happy with our session and the information we both received was great. I think the best thing was Aaron fully understands what is going on and feels more comfortable going forward.
I cant wait for thursday as thats our pre-cycle appointment!
